They took it to Diagon Alley, considering it was only really a kitten, and gave it to the Magical Menagerie. Some twelve years later, the cat recognised the son of his previous owners at once, and pounced at him, but landed on one of Harry’s friends instead. Crookshanks never went back to his original owner, but Hermione was the next best thing.
